“Punk became a fashion just like hippy used to be and it ain’t got a thing to do with you or me.” Ada pemandangan aneh ketika saya mengunjungi Kinokuniya Grand Indonesia beberapa waktu lalu. Di bagian musik, di antara buku-buku soal musisi mainstream, terselip sebuah buku dengan logo yang lumayan familiar dengan saya ; The Story of Crass. Oke, Crass memang bukan musisi yang populer di Indonesia, terus kenapa mereka punya buku ini dalam katalognya ya?! Jarang-jarang ada naskah mengenai sejarah punk Inggris tanpa menyertakan kontribusi Sex Pistols seperti dalam buku ini. Ketika Johnny Rotten meneriakan slogan “Anarchy!” hanya demi sensasi subversif dalam musiknya sekaligus marketing gimmick bagi sex shop milik pasangan Malcolm McLaren dan Viviene Westwood, Crass sudah terlebih dulu membawa realisasi kata itu ke tingkat lebih lanjut.

Cikal bakal Crass diawali dengan sebuah komune anarkis bernama Dial House yang terdiri atas sekelompok mahasiswa seni, musisi, sastrawan dan aktivis perdamaian yang menyabot sebuah lahan tidur di wilayah Essex, Inggris, sebagai basis gerakan di tahun 1960-an. Mereka sudah terlebih dulu mempraktekkan prinsip esensial dalam teori anarkisme, seperti membangun pertanian mandiri untuk memperkuat basis ekonomi di tingkatan akar rumput.
Seperti layaknya tren gerakan sosial paska era Baader-Meinhoff, mereka juga mengadopsi prinsip-prinsip anti-kekerasan dalam ruang geraknya. Para aktivis Dial House ini kemudian menemukan bentuk ekspresi artistiknya ketika punk gelombang pertama mulai menunjukkan embrionya. Musik-musik eksperimental avant garde yang selama ini mereka geluti dirasakan tidak bisa menyuarakan ide-ide revolusioner sudah mereka jalani. Jadilah Penny Rimbaud, Steve Ignorant, dan kawan-kawannya membentuk Crass, dengan dibantu seniman muda Gee Vaucher untuk divisi artistiknya. Yang membedakannya dengan band punk lain pada masa itu adalah mereka kerap menyertakan aksi panggungnya dengan orasi budaya, pembacaan puisi, dan diskusi.

Ketika tren punk membuat banyak anak muda Inggris berkeliaran dengan kostum yang aneh dan berantakan, Crass malah tampil rapi dengan gabungan pakaian kasual dan seragam militer yang serba hitam. Tak berapa lama, Sex Pistols merilis singel Anarchy in the UK dan mengangkat punk menjadi fenomena nasional. Dalam waktu singkat punk menjadi perhatian media massa, meme pemberontakan yang menyebar membuatnya jadi fenomena kultural, tak terkecuali beberapa pihak yang mencoba bermain mata dengan industri. Pada saat itulah Crass menyatakan kematian punk, sama seperti ketika Nietzsche membunuh Tuhan. Crass memanifestasikan pernyataan mematikan tersebut dalam lagunya, Punk is Dead.

Tentu saja hal ini membuat Crass jadi band yang dibenci. Berbagai pihak menyatakan Crass adalah kaum hippy, bukan punk. Bahkan Sex Pistols sendiri membuat slogan “Never Trust A Hippy!” dalam lagu Who Killed Bambi? yang secara implisit ditujukan kepada Crass. Wattie Buchan dan The Exploited mencoba menegasikannya dengan lagunya Punk Not Dead, si mulut besar Jello Biafra dan Dead Kennedys mengeluarkan kritik dalam lagu Anarchy For Sale. Tapi semua itu tidak menghentikan langkah Crass. Mereka malah semakin kritis dalam perjuangannya. Tidak hanya bersuara keras untuk masalah internal punk saja, mereka juga kerap bikin gerah pemerintah Inggris. Crass pernah menggelar aksi massa dan pemutaran film untuk menentang invasi tentara Inggris ke pulau Falklands.

Di tingkatan ideologi, anarkisme bukan satu-satunya keyakinan mereka. Masalah feminisme, hak azasi binatang, perang, globalisasi, dan lingkungan hidup juga tidak luput dari perhatian mereka. Crass adalah salah satu band yang juga mempraktekan direct action dalam sepak terjangnya, tidak hanya sekedar bersuara melalui lagu. Selain dibenci, Crass juga dihormati. Kehadirannya yang inspirasional juga turut mendorong kelahiran band-band lain yang kemudian masuk dalam kategori anarko-punk dan genre-genre lainnya, seperti Conflict, Subhumans, Flux of Pink Indians, Poison Girls, MDC, Rudimentary Peni, Zounds, Resist to Exist, Aus Rotten, Disrupt, Chumbawamba, Atari Teenage Riot, Amebix, bahkan Anthrax pada awal kehadirannya.

Fresh Album Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding 2011

And so the wait is over. Beady Eye -- the band formed from the ashes of long-running saga-cum-rock band Oasis -- have announced details of their much anticipated debut album. Cheekily entitled 'Different Gear, Stll Speeding,' the 13-song album will see the light of day on Feb. 28, 2011.

Produced by Steve Lillywhite and recorded in London's RAK studios, a foretaste of the album was made available when 'Bring the Light' was given away as a free download on Nov. 9. The track was downloaded 350,000 times within the first 24 hours of availability.

The band consists of singer Liam Gallagher, guitarists Gem Archer and Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock. They'll be joined on bass and keyboards by Jeff Wootton and Matt Jones respectively on their upcoming European tour which sold out in less than 30 minutes.

After acareer in Anggisluka, tearing bass in Essen Und Blood and become a keyboardist 'extra' in the Southern Beach Terror, the student is quietly assembling a composition of songs played andsung by myself. Some of his songs stance adopted Regina Spektordeath and the rest have tasted sweeter flavor in any weather and theatmosphere as a potent pop music in general.

This is a pretty good album, very consistent and absolutely listenable, so I would recommend it to the post rock fan in special, but also to any prog rock fan who would like to explore this different genre.

post rock/math rock band from USA.; well, where else? It seems that every band that plays this genre comes from that country (albeit also from different regions). I´m not an especialist or even fan of this kind of music, but since I like to try something new once in a while I decided to give it a shot. Besides, the name was quite curious (Tristeza means sadness in portuguese, but I don´t know if there is any connection with my native language).

This is their debut and I found the music inside quite interesting: guitar driven, as it is common with post rock bands, but there are (discreet) keyboards too. The tracks are all short (the only exceptionis When We Glow, which clocks a little over the 6 minute mark) and totally instrumental. As usual on this style, the melodies are quite delicate and minimalistic. For the casual listener they might sound repetitive and without much structure, but after some spíns it´s easy to find that they are quite nice and atmospheric (NOT new age). Different, ok, but not self indulgent nor too freakish like so many avant guard or ´modern´ stuff I´ve found during the years. Here the music is definitly more on the soft side, like a soundtrack of a film, making you think of nice landscapes and travellings.
